Portage for freelancers

Tell clients when you’re free before they have to ask.

Say what kind of work you take and the date you can start, and the note comes down by itself when you’re booked. Put your rates and your best projects under it, on a page search engines can read, so clients who look up your name can find it.

Packaging and brand design, from Victoria

I’m Ottilie. I design labels and boxes for people who make food and drink, mostly here on the Island.

  • How a project goes

What do you need from me first?

What you make, who buys it and where it sits in the shop. Photos of the shelf help me more than a mood board.

    Do you handle the printing?

I send files ready for the printer, and I’m happy to talk to yours. I don’t resell printing, so you pay them directly.

Can I see more of your work?

Yes. Some of it isn’t on shelves yet, so ask and I’ll send you a password for the rest of my portfolio.

Three things clients look for first.

  1. Say when you’re free.

Pick the kind of work you want and the date you can start.

  2. Show a few projects.

Pictures of the work, with a line about what each client asked for.

  3. Write down your rates.

A day rate, a project price or “Quoted”, in your own words.

Ottilie designs packaging in Victoria, Bridie writes web copy from St. John’s, and Jonah builds websites for shops and charities in Winnipeg. None of them are real. These three are invented. Pick the one whose work is closest to yours.

Clients ask when I can start

Add a note that says you’re available for work, what kind and from which date. It comes off your page by itself on the end date you set.

  • My clients are in other time zones

Put the hours you answer messages on your page. Each visitor sees them in their own time, and can add them to their calendar.

  • A new client wants to know who I’ve worked for

List past projects on a timeline, with the client, the dates and a line on what you did. It prints cleanly if someone wants it on paper.

  • I send a lot of proposals

Give each proposal its own link to your page by adding a word to the end. Your numbers show which ones were opened, and never who opened them.

  • I meet clients at events

Your page prints as business cards, each with a code to your page. A contact card on it saves your name, email and number to a phone in one tap.

Contracts and invoices stay wherever you keep them now.

About clients, rates and being found.

We keep improving your page, free.

When we improve how search engines and AI answer engines read pages, yours gets the change by itself.

What that covers

When we improve how search engines and AI answer engines read pages, yours gets the change by itself.

  • Facts search engines can read. Your page carries structured data: who you are, where you are, your hours and dates, and your links, in the terms search engines and AI answer engines read. It’s built from what’s on your page and nothing else, and when those terms change, we update every page.
  • Events, menus and prices. Dates, menus, price lists, questions and releases are each described the way search engines expect them, and an event carries its venue and ticket link when you’ve given them.
  • Found when it changes. Once your page is in search, it’s in our sitemap with the date it last changed, and we tell the search engines that use IndexNow when it changes or first comes into search.

Nobody can promise a place in search results or a mention in an AI answer, so we don’t. What we can do is make your page easy to read and accurate, and keep it that way.

Will clients find my page when they search my name?
They can. Your page is real text that search engines can read, with your name as its main heading. Tick “Let search engines index this page” in the editor’s settings, and it starts working once your page has your name, a line about you and at least two links, and you’ve confirmed your email. Nobody can promise where it’ll rank, so we don’t.
Some of my best work is under an NDA. Can I still show it?
Yes. Put the link to it behind a password, and only the clients you give the password to can open it. The address stays out of your page until someone types it.
What happens to “Available for work” once I’m booked up?
Every availability note has an end date, up to a year out, and it comes off your page by itself on that day. You can also give the date you’re free from, so a client reading it in March knows you can start in May.
Can clients pay my invoice through my page?
No, because money never moves on a Portage page. Your rates are there for people to read, and the button under them goes to your email or your booking calendar. Invoices and deposits stay with whatever you use now.
Is it really free?
Yes. Every page feature is free for everyone. You only pay if you want an identity or business check, Unmarked to take the Portage credit off a business page, your page on a domain you already own, custom work from the studio, or, if you look after more than 5 clients’ pages, the Agency plan. One organisation running 10 or more pages of its own can choose Enterprise. None of those adds a feature. Every free page has a small Made with Portage line at the bottom, ours included, and your page never comes down because you didn’t buy something.

Have your page ready before the next enquiry.

Put it in your email signature and on every proposal you send.
