  • Before your first clean-up

    Do I need a boat?

No. Most clean-ups are from the shore. On island days we put people without a boat in with someone who has one.

    Can kids come?

Yes, with a grown-up. We have small gloves and short grabbers, and a planting night is a good first one.

    Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes, we’re a registered charity. Our donation page emails a receipt for any gift of $20 or more.

What happens to the water samples?

They go to a lab, and the results go into our annual report. If something looks wrong, we tell the town first.

What people ask before they give or pitch in.

We need volunteers on the same nights every week

Put them on a weekly timetable once. The page says when the next one starts, and a volunteer can add your nights to the calendar on their phone.

Our events change every month

List each one with its date and where it is. A date comes off your page the day after, so nobody turns up to last month’s clean-up.

Three moreFour moreFunders ask for our annual report · People ask where to donate · We want a list of people who can help · New volunteers ask the same questions
  • Funders ask for our annual report

Upload it as a PDF. It opens on any phone, and the row says how big the file is before anyone taps it.

  • People ask where to donate

Add a Donate button that goes to the donation page you already use. Money never moves on a Portage page, so tax receipts still come from the same place.

  • We want a list of people who can help

An email sign-up collects names for your volunteer list. Each one can go straight to your newsletter service, or onto a list you download whenever you need it. We never email them.

  • New volunteers ask the same questions

Answer them once on your page, like where to park or whether kids can come along. Each answer opens with a tap, and search engines can read them too.

Donations go through the donation page you already use.

A lake group, an animal rescue and a reading program.

All three are made up. Keewatin Shore Watch looks after the water around Kenora, Hay Bale Rescue finds homes for animals near Lethbridge, and Partridge Island Readers pair volunteer tutors with adults in Saint John who are working on their reading. These three are invented, so borrow whatever helps.

About donations, volunteers and search.

We keep improving your page, free.

When we improve how search engines and AI answer engines read pages, yours gets the change by itself.

What that covers

When we improve how search engines and AI answer engines read pages, yours gets the change by itself.

  • Facts search engines can read. Your page carries structured data: who you are, where you are, your hours and dates, and your links, in the terms search engines and AI answer engines read. It’s built from what’s on your page and nothing else, and when those terms change, we update every page.
  • Events, menus and prices. Dates, menus, price lists, questions and releases are each described the way search engines expect them, and an event carries its venue and ticket link when you’ve given them.
  • Found when it changes. Once your page is in search, it’s in our sitemap with the date it last changed, and we tell the search engines that use IndexNow when it changes or first comes into search.

Nobody can promise a place in search results or a mention in an AI answer, so we don’t. What we can do is make your page easy to read and accurate, and keep it that way.

Can people donate through our page?
Not on the page itself, because money never moves on a Portage page. Your Donate button goes to the donation page you already use, so donors get their tax receipts from the same place they always have.
Will people find us when they search for our name?
Your page is real text that search engines can read: your name, what you do and your events are written out on it. Once it has a line about your work and a couple of links, people who look you up by name can find it.
Can several of us look after the page?
Yes. Invite people as managers or editors and they work on the page from their own sign-in, so nobody passes a password around. When a board member or a coordinator moves on, you take them off.
Can we put our annual report on the page?
Yes. Upload it as a PDF and it gets a row of its own, with the file size beside the title. It opens on a phone like any other PDF, and you can swap in next year’s when it’s ready.
Is it really free?
Yes. Every page feature is free for everyone. You only pay if you want an identity or business check, Unmarked to take the Portage credit off a business page, your page on a domain you already own, custom work from the studio, or, if you look after more than 5 clients’ pages, the Agency plan. One organisation running 10 or more pages of its own can choose Enterprise. None of those adds a feature. Every free page has a small Made with Portage line at the bottom, ours included, and your page never comes down because you didn’t buy something.
