Portage for restaurants and cafés

The menu, the hours and the way in, in one tap.

Your page shows today’s menu with its prices, says whether you’re open right now, and puts a line at the top when the soup’s gone or the truck has moved. Bookings and orders go where they already do.

  • Before you come

    Can I bring my dog?

On the patio, yes, and there’s a water bowl by the door. Inside, only service dogs.

    Do you take bookings?

For six or more, yes. Smaller tables are first come, first served, and the bar’s always walk-in.

    Is the patio covered?

Half of it is, with heaters. When it’s blowing a gale we close it and squeeze everyone inside.

    Is it step-free?

The front door and the washroom are. The patio has a ramp at the Lower Water Street end.

We made all three up. The Kettle & Gull pours on the Halifax waterfront, Little Larch bakes on 82 Avenue in Edmonton, and Chinook Tacos parks somewhere different every day in Calgary. We made all three up. Start from any of them.

What people ask before they walk in.

People want the menu before they come

Type your menu in sections, with prices in your own words and the dietary marks you use, spelled out in a key. A long menu sits in two columns on a computer.

People turn up when we’re closed

Your hours say open now and until when, in your own time zone. Add a holiday ahead of time and the page says closed that day.

  • Trivia, music and the patio nights

List them as dates, and each one comes off the page the day after. Every place opens directions in three map apps.

  • We sell out, or the truck moves

Put one line at the top from your phone, like “Sold out of croissants” or where you’re parked, with directions. It comes down when your time’s up.

  • We want the page on the tables

Print a table tent that reads from both sides and a window sign with the week’s hours. Each has its own code, and your stats count the scans.

  • Bookings and delivery go elsewhere

Keep them there. A Book a table or Order row goes to the service you already use, and nothing is paid on your page.

Every feature here is free, and nothing is ever sold or paid for through your page.

How these work, step by step: QR code and print kit, questions and answers and a menu or price list.

What restaurant owners ask us.

Can we put our menu on the page instead of a PDF?
Yes. Type it in sections, with a price beside each dish in your own words: a number, “Market price” or “Half or whole”. Mark dishes vegetarian, vegan or gluten free and the page prints a key under the menu. It’s real text, so it reads well on a phone and search engines can read it. If you’d rather keep a PDF, upload that instead.
Can people order or book a table through the page?
Not on the page itself, because money never moves on a Portage page. Add a row that goes to the booking or ordering service you already use, and put your own words on the button: Book a table, Order for pickup, Call us.
Can we say we’ve sold out, or where the truck is today?
Yes. Right now puts one line at the top of your page from your phone, with directions when it’s a place. Pick how long it stays up, from an hour to a day, and it comes down by itself.
Can we put a code on the tables?
Yes. Your page prints as a table tent that reads the right way up from both sides, and as a window sign with the week’s hours. Each one has its own code, so your stats show which one people scanned, and nothing on it records who they are.
Is it really free? What’s the catch?
No catch. Every feature is free for everyone. You only pay if you want an identity or business check, Unmarked to take the Portage credit off a business page, room to look after more than ten clients’ pages from one account, or custom work from the studio. None of those adds a feature. Every free page has a small Made with Portage line at the bottom, ours included, and your page never comes down because you didn’t buy something.
