Instagram’s five links

Do I still need a link in bio now that Instagram allows 5 links?

Not always: if five links cover everything you want people to find, Instagram’s own links can be enough. A link in bio page still helps when you have more than five things to share, use other apps too, want to change links in one place, or want to see which links people tap.

Instagram has let every profile add up to five links since 18 April 2023. They show as a short list on your profile, and you add them in the app.

When five links are enough

Plenty of people never need more than Instagram gives them.

  • You send people to one or two places

A shop and a website, or a booking page and a menu. Five slots hold that with room to spare.

  • Instagram is the only app you use

If nobody finds you anywhere else, there’s no other bio to keep in step.

  • Your links rarely change

If the same five links are right all year, editing them in the app now and then is no trouble.

When a link in bio page still helps

  • More than five things

Your shop, your newsletter, last week’s video, the next show and a booking page are already five, before your other profiles.

  • Other apps with one link

TikTok gives a personal account one website link once it has 1,000 followers. One page’s address works in every bio, so each app sends people to the same place.

  • Change it once

A new release or a sold-out date means one edit on your page, not one in every app.

  • Things a link can’t be

Your opening hours, a player, an email sign-up, your tour dates or a contact card people save. A list of five addresses can’t hold those.

  • Knowing which bio worked

With ?via=ig on the address in your Instagram bio, your page’s numbers say how many visits Instagram sent, beside each other app.

How each bio gets its own word

Using both

You don’t have to pick one.

  1. Put your page firstMake your link in bio page the first of Instagram’s links, with ?via=ig on the end.
  2. Keep one or two beside itYour shop or the thing you’re pushing this week can sit next to it as direct links.
  3. Let the page hold the restEverything else lives on your page, where you can change it from your phone any time.

What people ask about Instagram’s links

How many links can I have in my Instagram bio?

Up to five. Instagram added them on 18 April 2023, and you add them in the app under Edit profile, then Links. Instagram’s help says it can’t be done on a computer.

Links on Instagram, step by step

Is a link in bio page still worth it?

It is when you share more than a few things, use more than one app, or want to change links in one place. If one or two links are all you need, Instagram’s own links may be all you want.

Which of my five links should be the link in bio page?

The first. People tend to tap the top one, and the page behind it leads to everything else.

Does a link in bio page cost money?

Not on Portage. Every page feature is free, with no trial, and you never need a card to make or keep your page.
