Your link on Instagram

How to put your link in bio on Instagram.

Instagram lets you add up to 5 links to your profile, from the app. Put your Portage page first, with ?via=ig on the end, and everything else can live on your page, where you can change it any time.

What Instagram allows for links today

  • You can add up to 5 links to your profile, and anyone, on Instagram or off it, can see them.[1]
  • Links are added in the Instagram app. Instagram’s help says it can’t be done on a computer.[1]
  • Every account can put a link sticker on a story, as of October 2021, with some exceptions, such as new accounts.[2]
  • Instagram shows a pop-up warning before a link in someone’s bio that may be suspicious opens.[3]
  • Meta’s spam rules cover misleading links, cloaking and deceptive redirects.[4]

Putting your Portage page on Instagram

Your Portage page goes in your profile’s links, first in the list.

  1. Publish your Portage page, then copy its address. In the editor, Share links has it ready with ?via=ig on the end.
  2. In Instagram, go to your profile and tap Edit profile, then Links.
  3. Tap Add link, paste your address and tap Done.
  4. If you have other links there, open Links again, then Options, then Reorder links, and move your Portage page to the top.

See which visits came from Instagram

Instagram usually opens links in its own browser, which doesn’t say where a visit came from. Add ?via=ig to the address in your bio, and those visits show in your numbers as your Instagram link instead of “Direct or unknown”.

portage.camp/@yourname?via=ig
  • In the editor, open Share links. Once Instagram is one of the profiles on your page, there’s a button that copies this address for you.
  • For a second spot on the same app, type your own word in the “Somewhere else” box, like one word for each video or post, and each shows up on its own line.
  • The word only names where a visit came from. Nobody’s identity is in it, and Portage counts visits without cookies.

How the numbers work

If Instagram says a link may be unsafe

Instagram says it shows a pop-up warning before a bio link that may be suspicious opens. Its help pages don’t say which list it uses, or give a form for asking it to look again.

  1. Check the address you pasted.Open it yourself in a private window. A typo, an extra space or a shortened link in front of it can trip a warning, so use your page’s own portage.camp address with nothing in front of it.
  2. Look at every link on your page.A warning can come from what your page links to, not just from your page. Open each link and take out or replace any that goes somewhere you don’t trust, or that now goes somewhere new.
  3. Look up the address with Google.Search for Google’s “Safe Browsing site status” and paste in your page’s address. It says whether Google lists the address as unsafe, which rules one common list in or out.
  4. Keep the address plain.Meta’s rules count misleading links and deceptive redirects as spam, so paste your page’s own address, not a shortened link or a redirect in front of it.
  5. Tell us.If the warning is about portage.camp itself, report it as a bug from the link at the foot of any Portage page, with the app’s name and what it said. We’ll look into it and take it up with the app.

What people ask

If Instagram allows 5 links, why use a link in bio page?

Five links show as a short list in your profile. A Portage page holds the rest: more links, an email sign-up, players, your hours and your events, and you can change it without touching your profile. Many people put their Portage page first and keep one or two others beside it.

Is a Portage page free to use on Instagram?

Yes. Every page feature is free for everyone, including stats, scheduled links, email sign-ups and every theme. There’s no trial, and you never need a card to make or keep your page.

Will ?via=ig change where my link goes?

No. It opens the same page. The word only tells your numbers which link the visit came from, so you can see what Instagram sends you.
