Why Portage

Why Portage is free, and who makes it

Portage is a free link in bio from a small studio in Edmonton, Canada, for people who run their own show. Here’s who we are, how we’re paid, and what we’ll never do.

Who makes Portage

Portage is made by Cadenic Studios, a small studio in Edmonton, Alberta. Cadenic Studios is a sole proprietorship owned by Wyatt McPherson, and besides Portage it builds websites and apps for clients.

We run our own pages on Portage too, made in the same editor you’ll use: our space game, our sports app, Wyatt’s own page and the studio’s.

Edmonton is a city of market stalls, bands, rec leagues, tradespeople and side projects. That’s who Portage is for, here and everywhere else: people who run their own show.

Who it’s for

Creators and streamers, sole traders and small shops, bands, clubs and teams, tradespeople, people looking for work, and anyone who needs one good link. In Canada, Europe, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the United States or anywhere else, Portage is yours to use, and every feature comes with it.

Why every feature is free

Every feature works on every page, for everyone, and our terms promise that nothing you use today will start costing money. Here’s how that pays for itself.

  • The credit brings people

A free page carries a small Made with Portage line at its foot. That’s how new people find us, and it costs nobody anything.

  • Some people choose an extra

An identity check, a business check, or taking the credit off a business’s page. None of them unlocks a feature.

  • Some people give a gift

A gift buys nothing and asks nothing back. It keeps Portage free for everyone and pays for what we build next.

  • It shows what we can do

Portage is our studio’s own work, out where anyone can use it. Some people who like it ask us to build something for them.

What we’ll never do

  • Put ads on your page

Your page shows what you put on it, and nothing we’re paid to show. In our terms

  • Sell your data

Not yours, and not your visitors’. We never sell anyone’s data. In our terms

  • Take a cut of what you sell

Nothing is sold through your page. Your buttons go wherever you sell, and your buyers pay you there.

  • Follow your visitors around

No tracking pixels, no ad scripts and no cookie banner. We count visits without cookies and never store anyone’s IP address. In our privacy notice

  • Start charging for what’s free

Nothing you use today will start costing money. In our terms

  • Email you asking for money

The only mail we send about money is a receipt for something you bought.

  • Keep your page from you

Download your page, your numbers and your email list whenever you like. In our terms

Questions about us

Who owns Portage?
Cadenic Studios, a sole proprietorship owned by Wyatt McPherson in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Portage is the studio’s own product.
Is Portage really free?
Yes. Every feature works on every page, for everyone, and our terms say nothing you use today will start costing money. The few things that cost money are optional extras, and none of them adds a feature.
Does Portage take a cut of what I sell?
No. Nothing is sold through your page, so there’s nothing to take a cut of. Your buttons go to wherever you sell.
Where can I buy paid extras?
Paid extras are sold in Canada today, by Interac e-Transfer. Custom work from the studio is open to everyone, wherever you live, the United States included, and a custom project can include an identity or business check for your page. Every feature on Portage is free, everywhere.
Is my page stored in Canada?
No. Vercel serves Portage from around the world, and our database is with Supabase in the eastern United States. The privacy notice names every company involved and what each one sees.
