Not for AI training

Can you stop AI from training on your art? Your page can ask.

Every Portage page asks the AI training crawlers to stay away, from your words and from the pictures you upload. It’s on from the start, and you don’t have to know what robots.txt is.

Free on every Portage page, with every other feature. Nothing to upgrade to.

What your page asks, and who it asks.

  • The AI crawlers, by name

Our robots.txt names the crawlers that collect for AI training and asks them to stay off every page and every upload.

  • A do-not-mine notice

Every page and every upload carries a text and data mining reservation, the notice the TDM Reservation Protocol uses, in the file and on each response.

  • Search still works

Search engines aren’t asked to stay away, so if you turn search on, people can still find your page by your name.

The lines your page sends.

This is the request as it stands in portage.camp/robots.txt today, read from the same code that writes the file, beside the do-not-mine notice.

The group also repeats the lines every crawler gets, which are left out here.

From portage.camp/.well-known/tdmrep.json

The same reservation goes out as a tdm-reservation: 1 header on every page and every upload.

What a request can’t do.

  • It’s a request. Crawlers that follow robots.txt stay away; a crawler that ignores the rules will ignore this too.
  • It can’t take back anything collected before you put it here, or copies of your work that live elsewhere.
  • It covers your Portage page and uploads. Your work on other sites follows those sites’ own rules.

There’s nothing to do.

Start a page that asks

  1. Make your page.

The request covers it from the first publish.

  2. Upload your work.

Pictures you upload sit where crawlers that follow the rules don’t go, and carry the same notice.

  3. Turn search on if you want it.

Search engines are a separate choice in Settings, and they’re never asked to stay away for AI reasons.

Questions artists and writers ask.

Does this stop AI from training on my art?
It asks the AI training crawlers not to, in the two places a crawler that follows the rules looks. A crawler that ignores robots.txt isn’t stopped by anything a web page can say, so it’s a request, not a wall.
Will my page still show up on Google?
Yes, if you turn search on. Search crawlers aren’t on the list, and naming the training crawlers leaves ordinary search alone.
Does Portage use my work for AI?
No. Portage has no AI features and doesn’t give anyone your page or your uploads to train on.
Do I have to switch anything on?
No. It’s on for every page and every upload, and there’s no setting to forget.

Show your work. Keep it yours.

Pick a handle and publish. The request covers your page and every picture you upload.
